ABOUT OUR Executive Chef, Melinda Hackford

For more than 25 years, Melinda Hackford has been making mouths water with her down home cooking. What started out working for her mother as the head cook at a Dude Ranch, quickly morphed into something more. Starting out as a dishwasher, then moving up through prep cook and head cook, Melinda was hooked. Besides preparing food in several restaurants over the years, she ran the eatery at a golf course and even her own bake shop.

Melinda landed at Williamsburg as a moment of pure serendipity. Her son had applied to work in the kitchen at Williamsburg, and left his mom’s phone number for contact. When the previous Executive Chef reached out to offer Melinda’s son a job, he had already accepted employment somewhere else. But, it just so happened that Melinda was interested and accepted the role of weekend Chef, which eventually transitioned into the fulltime Executive Chef.

Melinda loves preparing a variety of meal types. Near the top of the list are comfort foods, including casseroles. But that doesn’t stop her from indulging in other genres, such as Mexican and Italian dishes.

In the end, what really brings Melinda joy is hearing residents say how much they love the food. In many ways, meal time can be the most important part of a resident’s day — they have a chance to socialize with one another and just enjoy being together of a good meal.
